Transport
TRANSPORT WITHIN ST. PETERSBURG can be divided into
two basic groups: public and private. Public
transport (the metro and above-ground transport) is
dirt cheap though far from user-friendly, usually
packed like a can of sardines, and it doesn’t smell
much better. Private transport (taxis and hired cars
or buses) are of course more expensive though prices
are usually reasonable by Western standards.* As is
often the case in this country, there is no middle
ground: either you sweat it out with the rank-and-
file on the municipal offerings or you cruise around
in the relative luxury of your own private machine.
